Kyoto Festivals 2025. Many of the events and festivals in the city are historical reenactments that celebrate kyoto's glory days as the capital. Centered around yasaka shrine, it has roots dating back to 869 when the people of kyoto held a festival to pray for respite from a plague that had befallen the city.
The city also has a number of seasonal attractions such as cherry blossoms that bring its many temples, shrines, palaces, parks and gardens to life. The kyoto gozan okuribi ritual marks the end of obon and sees five large fires lit on the mountainsides around kyoto city on the evening of august 16th, said to guide deceased ancestors who have returned to visit the living back to heaven.
